Touchdown on Reddit

For years, Spain and Portugal have been magnets for British retirees in search of slower days and warmer skies. But something new is happening. Across the Iberian Peninsula, a younger, more diverse wave of British professionals is arriving.
Founders, freelancers, and families, all seeking a different rhythm of life.
The world changed after Covid. Three years of restrictions left lasting marks on how people view work, time, and connection. Across the UK, priorities have moved away from possessions and toward experiences, well-being, and community.
Touchdown’s 2025 Relocation Report reflects this shift. Over half (62%) of British professionals plan to relocate within the next two years, with Spain topping the list of preferred destinations. Among them, more than half cite lifestyle as the main reason for making the move.
That sentiment stretches across generations. From young professionals starting out to experienced founders rethinking their future, many are trading long commutes and grey skies for a life that feels more balanced, more open, and more fulfilled.
So, why Spain and Portugal - and why now?
Both nations offer something that goes beyond sunshine. They represent a mindset. The cultural emphasis on flexibility and balance runs deep. In places where the ethos is to work to live, rather than live to work, people find space to breathe.
Touchdown’s data shows that nearly six in ten respondents see flexible working and improved work-life balance as key motivators for relocation. Businesses have adapted too, recognising the value of freedom and trust in building stronger, happier teams. Remote work has turned what was once a dream into a practical choice. And if work can happen anywhere, why not from a terrace overlooking the sea?
For many, climate still matters most. According to Touchdown’s findings, weather is the biggest single factor in people’s openness to relocate. With more than 300 days of sunshine each year, Spain and Portugal naturally rise to the top of the list.
Sunlight brings more than warmth. It affects mood, sleep, and overall health. Higher serotonin levels, stronger immune systems, and the daily chance to live outdoors all play a part in a happier, more sustainable routine.
Portugal - especially Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve - is experiencing a surge in popularity as a result of a more predictable tax regime, the digital nomad visa, and a lower cost of living. And Spanish cities like Barcelona and Madrid are seeing similar trends.
But looking beyond the clear skies and tax incentives, Lisbon in particular has become one of the most sought after relocation destinations - and that's down to its cultural heartbeat. The vibrant culture attracts a diverse group of relocators searching for fulfilment. It’s a place where heritage and modernity coexist with ease, offering a depth of character that faster-paced capitals often lose.
The rich cultural heritage, relaxed pace of life and friendly locals mean it ranks fourth globally for expat satisfaction, with 86% of relocators saying they’re happy with life there - well above the global average of 71% (according to the InterNations Expat City Ranking).
What’s unfolding across Spain and Portugal reflects more than a trend. It marks a recalibration of what people want from their working lives. Lower costs and a slower pace may attract people initially, but the deeper motivation is balance and the freedom to build a life that feels intentional.
