Technically yes: but a contract not registered with Finanças gives you far less protection, no receipts, no tax deduction and weak eviction rights.
Verbal or informal agreements are risky. Portuguese courts may sometimes recognise them, but you'll lack documentation and receipts. This can cost you your deposit, legal protection, and eligibility for residency or tax benefits.
We strongly recommend all tenancy agreements signed in Portugal be reviewed by a Portuguese Lawyer. This service includes exactly that.
The tenant may terminate the contract at any time after one-third of its initial duration (or renewal) has passed, by notifying the landlord in advance as follows: a) At least 120 days before the desired end date, if the contract is for one year or more b) At least 60 days before the desired end date, if the contract is for less than one year.
